A few Random thoughts on What’s In and What’s Out in Leadership:

Command and Control is out.

Management by position is out.

Wait until you’re “old enough” to really lead is out.

Top Down Hierarchy structure is out.

Power as the ultimate expression of leadership is out.

One career in one industry with one employer in one location is out.

I was sitting in my office listening to some worship music one afternoon when I had one of those moments. You know, those moments where you begin to think about what really matters. As I listened to the songs they reminded me of the incredible moments our students had at camp over the years. My mind began to review the bus ride home where I overheard students talking about changing their world. The statement was made that “this year is going to be different”. I remember as their faces flashed before my eyes that over the years we had seen over 1000 students come through our ministry and yet I could not answer the question for a large number of them. Some were students that I truly believe had an authentic experience. They were engaged in worship, prayer, campus clubs, and discipleship classes. They appeared to be on track on their spiritual journey and well on their way to a deeper spiritual walk. The question that began to break my heart as I sat with tears streaming from my face was a tough question I think we all need to honestly ask ourselves. We have all had those students. They walked away from God and the church. These are the students that at one time God entrusted to us to shepherd. The answer is not a simple one. There are many factors in finding the answer and there is no program that will fix it. This question has many pieces to what seems to be the puzzle we all want to solve. Is there a a missing piece. What could we do to finish it, or at least bring it into focus? What if those moments they had turned into movements in their lives? The question we have to answer is Where are They Now?
